Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Air Fryer (4+ quart capacity recommended)

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh Brussels sprouts Trimmed and halved if large.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Seasonings

  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

Preparation and Cooking

  • Begin by thoroughly washing the Brussels sprouts under cool running water. Carefully trim the woody bottom ends off of each sprout. If any of the outer leaves look yellowed or loose, peel and discard them. For larger Brussels sprouts, cut them in half lengthwise through the core to ensure they cook evenly and crisp up properly. For smaller sprouts, you may leave them whole.
  • Place the prepared Brussels sprouts into a large mixing bowl. Drizzle the 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the sprouts. Next, sprinkle the kosher salt, black pepper, and garlic powder evenly over the top of the oiled sprouts. Use a large spoon or your hands to toss the sprouts until every piece is thoroughly coated with the oil and seasonings. Ensure the seasoning is distributed well, as this is crucial for the final flavor.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 3 to 5 minutes, if your model recommends preheating. Carefully transfer the seasoned Brussels sprouts to the air fryer basket. Arrange the sprouts in a single layer as much as possible. If you are cooking a full pound of sprouts and they overcrowd the basket, work in two separate batches to guarantee optimal crispiness; overcrowding will result in steaming rather than frying.
  • Cook the Brussels sprouts at 400°F (200°C) for a total cooking time of 15 to 20 minutes.
  • After the first 8 minutes of cooking, carefully pause the air fryer and remove the basket. Vigorously shake the basket for a few seconds to tumble the Brussels sprouts and redistribute them. This ensures that all sides of the sprouts are exposed to the circulating heat, leading to even browning and crisp edges. Return the basket to the air fryer to continue cooking.
  • Continue air frying for the remaining 7 to 12 minutes, checking on the sprouts frequently after the 15-minute mark. The Brussels sprouts are done when the outside leaves are dark brown, crispy, and slightly charred, and the insides are tender when pierced with a fork. If you prefer them crispier, continue cooking for a few additional minutes. Once cooked to your preference, immediately transfer the air-fried Brussels sprouts to a serving platter. Serve hot as a flavorful side dish.

Notes

To customize the flavor, try replacing the garlic powder with onion powder, or add a pinch of smoked paprika. For extra richness, toss the finished sprouts with 1 tablespoon of balsamic glaze immediately before serving.
