Chocolate covered cherries are a simple, classic dessert or snack that is always welcome. From a classic holiday gift idea on Valentine’s Day to serving them up at a holiday get-together, these cherries coated in milk chocolate and drizzled in white chocolate are always the star of any show. That’s why I love making them!

I don’t know about you, but cherries are one of my favorite fruits. Chocolate is also one of my favorite sweets, so any time I can combine those two, I’m happy to do so. These cherries drenched in two kinds of chocolate are the perfect way to serve up two classic flavors in one classic dish.

I make these quite often for family and friends. I love to make batches as gifts for Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Christmas. I’ve also been known to whip up a batch when cherries first come into season just because I love the flavor so much! I just can’t get enough of these little chocolate covered bites, and neither can anyone else who’s around when I make them.

Chocolate Covered Cherries

Fresh, fruity, juicy, chocolatey. These are all words I’d use to describe these delicious chocolate covered cherries. When you get a nice bag of really fresh and juicy cherries, it’s just magical. Of course, they’re delicious on their own – I’ve been known to eat entire bags if I’m not careful – but when you cover them in chocolate? Well, you’re looking at a sweet treat that you just can’t say no to.

They’re also incredibly easy to make, which is an absolute huge bonus. There are a lot of chocolate covered recipes out there, from strawberries to nuts, and I’ve tried them all. This recipe for chocolate covered cherries is by far the easiest I’ve ever made.

Tips

This is just about the easiest recipe you’ll ever make, but there are a couple of tips that will make it even easier. Using these tips, you’ll get perfect chocolate covered cherries every time. They’ll be as delicious as they are beautiful.

Add Coconut Oil

You might be wondering why coconut oil is added to the chocolate. Well, it makes the chocolate the perfect dipping consistency. Without the coconut oil, the chocolate can get thick pretty quickly, making it more difficult to work with and making the chocolate harder to coat the cherries once it starts to cool. Adding the coconut oil thins out the chocolate a bit, allowing it to coat the cherries while not being so heavy that it overpowers the cherry flavor or makes an odd shape around the cherries.

A Piping Bag Makes Things Easier

After applying the initial chocolate coating to the cherries, you’ll be drizzling white chocolate over them to make them even prettier. Using a piping bag with a fine tip for this part makes things exponentially easier. I’ve been making these chocolate covered cherries for so long now, that I simply scoop out the white chocolate with a spoon and drizzle it right from the spoon, but when I started, I needed a piping bag to help me better control the flow of the chocolate, allowing me to get nice, even ribbons rather than globs. Either way works perfectly.

Variations

There isn’t much that I’d change about this recipe. These cherries are perfect exactly how they are. There is one way, however, that you can change them up and keep all the great flavors here. Reverse the chocolate. These cherries are just as delicious when coated in white chocolate and drizzled with milk chocolate.

Serving Chocolate Covered Cherries

Although I’ve been known to make chocolate covered cherries whenever the mood strikes, I typically like to save them for special occasions. These cherries make great Valentine’s Day gifts. They’re also a wonderful addition to fancier potlucks and other holiday get-togethers. To serve them, I like to simply place them in a nice tray and let everyone grab as many as they like as they walk by.

Storing Chocolate Covered Cherries

It’s best to make these cherries as close to serving time as possible and only make as many as you think will be eaten on that day. If you do have any leftovers, you can store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to two days.

I don’t recommend freezing them. They won’t go bad, but the cherries will expand as they freeze, most likely breaking the chocolate coating. When you defrost them, you’ll end up with quite a mess.
