Frequently Asked Questions

If you have questions about wontons, then I’ve got the answer. The following FAQ answers the most commonly asked questions about wontons.

What’s a wonton?

A wonton is a type of Chinese dumpling. In the beginning, wontons were no different from their dumpling counterparts, however, over the years, the methods and ingredients changed until we have the fried little pockets made of a thin dough that we all enjoy today.

Can you make wontons in an air fryer?

Absolutely! Simply place the wontons in a single layer in your air fryer basket, bush or spray them generously with oil, cooking spray, or an egg wash, and air fry them at 350 degrees for about 4 minutes.

What do wontons contain?

Traditional wontons are savory and are usually filled with a combination of ingredients such as pork, shrimp, poultry, crab, and/or vegetables. However, Americanized versions of wontons can have everything from savory to sweet fillings – just like these blackberry cream cheese wontons.

How do you seal wonton wrappers to fry?

Fold one end of the wrapper over the filling and moisten the bottom edge, Then, crimp the top part of the wrapper to the moistened edges to seal.

Can you freeze wontons?

You can. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and cover them loosely with plastic wrap. Then, place them in the freezer until they’re completely frozen. After they’re frozen, transfer them to a heavy-duty ziplock freezer bag.

Variations and Tips

This is a fairly straightforward recipe, but there are a few moving parts to it. I’ve included some tips to help make the process easier along with some easy variations that will allow you to make several different types of dessert wontons from this single recipe.

Tips

  • Be sure to gently press out the air in the wontons as you fold them up.
  • Moisten the edge of your wonton wrappers thoroughly to ensure a good seal, but be careful not to make them soggy.
  • Don’t overfill your wonton. You don’t want the filling to break through as they cook.
  • To keep the oil at the correct temperature, be sure not to overcrowd your pan when you fry the wontons.

Variations

  • You can use a variety of fruits for the filling. Simply follow the filling recipe and replace the blackberries with fruits like blueberries, raspberries, cherries, or strawberries.
  • To save time, you can use canned pie filling rather than making your own.
  • Try dusting your wontons with a combination of powdered sugar and cinnamon for more flavor.
  • Make a delicious dipping sauce to dip the wontons in.

Storage and Reheating

You can store these wontons in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 2 to 3 days. For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 2 months. If you freeze them, be sure to let them completely defrost before reheating them.

To reheat your wontons, place them on a baking sheet and cover them with foil. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes at 375 degrees, removing the foil for the last 2 minutes of cooking to let them get crispy again.

How to Make Blackberry Cream Cheese Wontons

Making these wontons has a few moving parts, but it’s very easy when you break it down into individual steps. Even beginners can make these homemade treats.

Step 1: Make the Blackberry Filling

In a small saucepan, combine the blackberries, lemon juice, and sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the sauce beings to boil and form. Make a slurry of corn starch and water in a small bowl and add it to the blackberries. Then, stir until thickened. Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool.

Step 2: Make the Cream Cheese Filling

Add the softened cream cheese and sugar to a small bowl and use an electric mixer to beat them together until they’re smooth and creamy.

Step 3: Make the Wontons

Place a few wonton wrappers on a clean, flat surface and add a teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture in the center of each wonton followed by a teaspoon of blackberry filling to the center of each wonton. Then, dip your finger into water and lightly moisten all of the edges of the wrapper to seal them. Grab all four corners of the wontons and pull them up, making sure to remove most of the air before sealing them. To seal, press the edges together firmly.

Step 4: Fry

Heat the oil over medium high heat in a large frying pan or wok. Add 5 – 6 wontons at a time and fry them in hot oil until they’re golden brown on all sides – about 4 – 5 minutes. When the wontons are golden brown, remove them from the pan with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil. Dust with powdered sugar and serve.
